Dahlias have been a part of San Leandro for many years.  There is mention of the Dahlia Club as one of the early social clubs of the 1880's in San Leandro.  The club later changed to the Ivy Club.

The San Leandro Dahlia Society was formed and held its first Dahlia Show in the Masonic building on August 29th, 1925.  Mrs. Luther Burbank was one of the visitors and contributed flowers from her husband's gardens.  There was also an exhibit from the San Quentin prisoners "Garden Beautiful" project.  The largest dahlia in the show measured nine and one-half inches in diameter.
